We got to the Fagaras Citadel on a Sunday afternoon, coming back from our weekend in the Bucegi mountains and took the chance to hide from the summer heat behind the citadel’s cold and thick walls.  There were only us and another group of 5 people visiting the citadel as it was almost closing time, but we did manage to take a complete tour of the citadel and explore its mysteries.

The Citadel was first built somewhere between the XIV and XVII centuries and served as a fortress, a defense system against the foreign invasions. In the XVII century, the Citadel becomes a residence for the rulers of that era and its 85 rooms are decorated accordingly.

In the XVIII century the Citadel is taken over by the Austrian occupation and between 1948 and 1960 it becomes a prison for political inmates during the communist regime.

Inside the Citadel you can find the Fagaras Country Museum, with important historical books, local clothing and crafts.
