The Mălăieşti Fortress is a small fortress in the village with the same name from Hunedoara county.
The fortress was built in the 14th century by the Sărăcin family, the rulers of the Sălaşu de Sus village. They were the second most important noble family from the Hațeg region of Romania, after the powerful Cândea family, known also as Kendeffy, after they changed their religion from Orthodox to Catholic.
The fortress was destroyed in a battle from the beginning of the 17th century and remained in ruins.
The fortress until 2012
Starting with 2012, the restoration of the fortress has begun and now it is finished.
The restoration raised much criticism, saying that it was done by untrained people in medieval restoration. In fact the fortress looks more like a modern building than a medieval fortress.
Anyways, if you are on the road from Petroşani to Hațeg, it is worth to change a little your route and have a short visit at Mălăieşti.
